All About 2019 Coronavirus and COVID-19: Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Here we’ll discuss about Coronavirus & COVID-19: Symptoms, Treatment and Precautions. Also all the basic information one must surely know. The Coronavirus threat today grips every human being on the earth. Nobody ever thought that a small local outbreak could engulf the whole population of the earth within small time. The spread was so quick and fast that even our great science and technology stood empty handed, watching helplessly this unavoidable situation.

The outbreak of Coronavirus took place in Wuhan, a city in China. Here the first case of Coronavirus was identified in December 2019. It grabbed world’s attention when we came to know about its contagious behavior and high contamination ability. Sudden spike in death rates triggered alarm for proper attention and elimination of the cause.

After proper study and investigation, it came to light that this disease is caused by virus that is highly infective and its intensity is also very high. It enters the body of host and causes symptoms of common cold, cough and short breath. If not taken care and administered proper medical care can cause death in a very short period of time. And due to its contagious behavior, it causes same symptoms and situation for the people coming in contact of the infected patient.

History of Coronavirus

Over the past years of studies scientist discovered that viruses can infect animals like horse, turkeys, cats, pigs, cattle, mice and rats but sometimes these animals can infest the viruses to human also.

The scientist first identified coronavirus in 1937 which was the one responsible for bronchitis in birds but had no harm to human. The first evidence of effect of Corona on human came to light in 1960 with symptoms of Common cold. The main human infesting Coronavirus that were identified before COVID-19 are particularly 229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1.

The Coronavirus basically attacks the respiratory tract of birds and mammals including human and causes some common cold, bronchitis, pneumonia, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The Coronaviruses can cause common cold but some they has caused severe illness. The Coronavirus causes infection during winter and spring season. Apart from COVID-19, other severely effecting caused coronavirus includes.

  • Middle East Respiratory Syndrome caused by MERS Virus.
  • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome caused by SARS Virus (first identified in the Guangdong province in southern China).

The COVID-19 Outbreak

The first few cases found in Wuhan city, China were found having connection with animals and seafood market. This gave us theory that it was initially transmitted from animals into human. Then there were cases having no connection with animal market, this gave confirmation that this disease can be transmitted by the infected persons to healthy one.

This recent identified Coronavirus which outbreak in Wuhan City, China and spread all over the world is termed by scientist as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 or SARS-CoV-2 and in general called Coronavirus. This SARS-CoV-2 causes a disease called COVID-19 that infects upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose and throat) or lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs).

Coronavirus Transmission

This contagious disease spreads through air as small droplets, when infected person sneezes, cough or exhales. These small droplets don’t suspend in air for much time and settle down on the nearby surfaces or ground. Anyone can be infected by breathing in the virus if he is nearby any COVID-19 infected person or by coming in contact of contaminated surface by touching it and later on touching own eyes, nose or mouth. In this way COVID-19 is considered an air borne disease. According to recorded data report, this virus can spread from person to person within proximity range of 6 feet or 2 meters without any protection (face mask, gloves or proper covering or face and hands).

Who is in Risk with Coronavirus?

A COVID-19 sick person can experience mild to moderate symptom and most of the cases recover back without any special treatment. But few of them are not that much lucky. As this virus infection is new for our body, so there is no existing immunity against this Coronavirus. It’s the reason for its quick spread and why everyone is so susceptible to this disease. Studies suggest that strong immune system of a body can resist the infection with very little damage.

Reports have also shown that COVID-19 attacks severely person with weak immunity, older adults (age over 60), person having health issues like, High blood pressure, Heart disease, Lung disease, Asthma, Kidney disease that needs dialysis, Obesity, Diabetes, Cancer treatment, especially chemotherapy, Liver disease, Cigarette smoking.

Other than these health issues, there are few other factors that decides the line of risk of infection. A person is at high risk of coronavirus contamination if he’s under following circumstances.

  • If you’re living in an area where there are cases of Coronavirus infection or you’re living with anyone who had been in contact with infected person.
  • Recently you have traveled to a location or community where ongoing community spread of this virus is identified.
  • If you or your partner is a health care personnel and providing service to COVID-19 infected patients or family.
  • Any other kind of activity with infected person or their family members.

Symptoms of COVID-19

Initially infected COVID-19 person can show mild respiratory symptoms and fever as symptom. The incubation period of this disease can be from 1-14 days. Infection symptoms are visible from day 2 to day 14, which are as following.

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Trouble breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Chills, sometimes with shaking
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

The severe infection of the virus can cause pneumonia, respiratory failure, septic shock and death. The major complication that may be caused by COVID-19 disease is a condition known as cytokine release syndrome or a cytokine storm. At this situation this infection causes trigger in your immune system, which causes increase of inflammatory protein called cytokines in your blood stream. Over flooding of cytokine in your blood stream can kill tissue and damage organs.

Coronavirus Diagnosis

Immediately Call doctor or inform medical facility or any helpline number provided to you by authorities, if feel the mentioned symptoms of COVID-19. If you think you have traveled in the area of community spread or came in contact of infected person and have symptoms like:

  • Fever of 100 F or higher
  • Cough
  • Trouble Breathing

In most countries the COVID-19 test is not available in general. Here the Government Authority or State Authority decides who needs to go through COVID-19 test.

The most common method of COVID-19 test is swab test. It helps in find any signs of coronavirus in your upper respiratory tract. In this test, the person requires to put a swab of cotton in nose or back of throat to get some testing samples. This swab is then send to laboratory for viral testing. If there is signs of coronavirus in sample then the test is positive otherwise negative. Generally it takes 24 hours to get result of the testing otherwise time also depends on number of samples arriving the testing lab in a day. A swab test can tell that if you have any virus present inside your body. But there’s also an antibody test which can help to know if you ever were in contact of the virus, even if you didn’t had any symptom at all.

Coronavirus Treatment

Till date there is no specific treatment of COVID-19, researchers and scientist are working round the clock to find way create a specific medication or vaccine for this pandemic. People showing mild symptoms are managed by rest, fluid and fever control as its treatment. If required then administered by medicines for sore throat, body aches and fever.

Researchers are focusing on using of medication that were effective on previous viral pandemics and observing its effects on Coronavirus. An antiviral medicine called remdesivir, which was created to fight Ebola is also look upon for treatment as it said that it help in recovery from disease 31% faster. hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine which are basically prescribed for malaria and autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are ruled out for emergency by FDA. Though their use shows mixed effect against COVID-19.

To treat autoimmune conditions, clinical trials are also conducted on tocilizumab. Scientist are also trying to extract antibodies from blood plasma of those people who have recovered from the disease have strong immune system. Everyone is working hard to find medication of it. Hope the vaccine for it will be soon available.
